Last Movie You Watched - 2020

Both daughters and I just had a whale of a time with Elvira Mistress of the Dark which just gets funnier each time I see it. Daughter Number One is somewhat besotted.

It did hold up, lots of great visual effects in it. Happily my two friends who watched it for the first time enjoyed it as well.

Because we are recording our thoughts for a podcast I did loads of research on the movie and was interested to find out how connected to the counter-culture of the 50s/60s it was. John C. Lilly, who invented the flotation tank, was inspired to go into biology by Brave New World. So it has a definite science-fiction pedigree.
 
It's a movie that has got better received over time, I think. I believe that it's not too similar to the novel - don't know, I haven't read it. But I'm told that the fairly recent Bluray restoration of this has scrubbed it up well.
 
It's been quite a while since I saw that one!

If I remember right though, Christopher Lee hated it - mainly because it involved such a deliberately young female character lead, although he was pleased to get away from Dracula for a while. And another one fairly recently scrubbed up for Bluray!
 
Daughter Number One and I just giggled our way through Eating Raoul which has to be one of the most amoral films I have ever seen. Utterly reprehensible - plot: two people kill lots of swingers for money without the slightest qualm - whilst being insanely funny.
 
I just watched the first Alien movie and John Carpenter's The Thing for the first time. Loved them both! Didn't realize that the Thing was low-key one of Wilford Brimley's best performances either. I had a fun time reading his wiki page after.
 
I would suspect these days that it is quite difficult to watch these movies 'fresh' as there's so much online and around about them these days. Most of the movies you probably know through general osmosis.

When I saw them on original release I didn't know what was there - the chestburster scene was a shock as no-one who had seen it was saying what happened. Now it is parodied. But I'm very pleased that they still hold up to someone who hasn't seen them before.

Suggestion: Now go see Aliens: rather different - but very James Cameron! :)

I fell in love very quickly with the malamute's performance at the start. That dog deserves to go into the horror hall of fame!

I am thinking I'll watch the original thing from the 1950s and also the 2011 prequel soon. In the meantime I'm going to keep my horror/thriller streak going with Psycho.

I had a dream after watching The Andromeda Strain 1971 where passengers on all international flights would have to go through the decontamination system from this movie ... well the xenon lamp part is what I recall from the dream and would have to checkin two days before your flight to do it all and 'recover' Makes me wonder what flying will be like.
