My 'new' writing is suffering, but I am making slow progress in reviewing, finalizing, editing and a bit of submitting/marketing.

Wasn't in Word 2010.
It just wasn't turned on. :D
The feature is in Windows OS as an option to turn on since before 2002. I didn't know when on mac, so I looked it up. Added in 2005. Earlier versions of OS X (and earlier Mac OS before 2001) needed a 3rd party program.
So Word 10 definitely could do it. I used it on Word 2002. It's definitely a built in but by default off feature of XP, Vista, Win7, Win8 and Win 10 and all MacOS since 2005.

I assume a feature exists and search (Manual, OS or Application help originally, and now) Internet how to use it. I've not wasted much time if it doesn't exist and if it does, then I can do what I envisaged.

I only stopped using Word & Excel completely a year ago.

I've been building/working with speech synthesizers since way before the IBM PC even existed
Oddly, me also. I started with Z80 assembler. I had a PC before IBM reduced the spec with their catalogue build. The last low level stuff I did was graphics & sound drivers for a DOS game in Modula-2 including using PC speaker as low quality "sound card" as well as SB card and MIDI simultaneously with loading from disk and scrolling playing area. Animations ran in separate co-routines. Basically an entire game engine OS that used no BIOS calls (they are not re-entrant), only used DOS to load the Modula-2 program.

Very cool. And since this is definitely progress... :D :D :D I started programming stand-alone microprocessor boards that were used in the credit industry to pull credit reports. :D Built my own S100 system and designed "The Sounding Board" which was a speech synthesizer running under the CP/M Operating system.

Ah... the good ol' Days! :D

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Progress Thread. LOL!

Another thousand words today on the runaway apprentice. The mystery deepens along with the magic. And then as I was driving to the store to get some toilet paper, the climax popped into my head, complete with how to spin the plot around a maguffin. I love when that happens.

A few more days and she's done.

Yeah, me too, I get a lot of my best ideas when sitting on the toilet! :D

Displacement behaviour. I spent a chunk of this morning doing this while avoiding doing the drawing/joke I should have been doing.

After that the one I should have been doing was done in about 10 minutes and just worked first time. Possibly because I HAD avoided doing it for so long. It had had time to ripen.

I get a lot of my best ideas
I get mine lying on top of bed listing to BBC R4, Clare FM (Irish local) or TSF Jazz (French). Or sometimes in bed. I don't exactly have writers block (I might work on a different novel), but getting a bit bogged down on "The Legal Talent". Writing a part about bullying and ragging of a teacher. It's lacking the specifics of the threats to other students and the abuse of the teacher. The teacher was badly mentally abused by a College Board member five books ago and thus didn't nip stuff in the bud. I could easily write a load of stuff, but I want it to seem believable in the context of the Alien World and the special college. You can't get expelled. If your social skills are too poor you might never graduate.

Not much progress this week

Fifteen hundred words and "The Last Legend," formerly known as the apprentice novelette is finished at 10,100 words. Thought of a nice sentimental twist for the end. Tomorrow, print out and polish. Then on to the next.

Rejigged some of the characterization in "The Last Legend," and built up the ending. Now at 11,100 words it's probably finished. But I'll print out another copy and go through it one more time before sending it in.
