TV Series or Show You're Watching

I started watching Farscape and uh, oof. Yeah, not a fan. The puppets are great, the blue bald alien is pretty cool, but aside from that it's just not doing it for me. Granted, I've only watched the first six episodes but... yeesh. I already fin John Criton (or however it's spelled) super annoying but it's kind of fun watching them because they're so hokey and it looks like the actor is having a hell of a time. Still, I'm gonna watch this one more casually moving forward and hope it gets better.

Part of the reason I haven't made any progress on that show is cause I decided to let myself off easy and watch something that isn't a thrifty and derivative Star Trek. I started watching The Expanse, and by started watching I mean I just finished watching season 3 because it's just so thoroughly entertaining and exciting. The main characters as they're written aren't anything special, but they're always consistently interesting enough to make me wish there was just more time spent developing them and seeing their relationships grow. It's there, I just wish there was more. Still, the side characters are utterly amazing. Most of the supporting cast is just so wonderful. Their characters are usually written to be more interesting (or at least have really great hooks) but even more than that have just this great presence on screen. I found myself entranced just by their speech mannerisms and appearances. I can't explain why but I have this irrational love for Gunny and I wish they would get more character moments. But where the show really shines for me is its story, which just keeps getting more and and more interesting as it goes on. I'm so excited for season 4...!

Before both of these shows I watched the rebooted Battlestar Galactica followed by a period of movies instead of shows. I have so many thoughts and feelings that just don't fit into a forum post. All I'll say is that it has an unprecedented consistency in quality and really thrives in character development. I think it has a lot of flaws and towards the end I felt like it really didn't have a solid sense of direction (my friend promises me there's a religious conspiracy involved that I look forward to hearing about), but still manages to be so thoroughly emotional, even when the story had me scratching my head. I've started watching the original Battlestar casually, dipping in whenever I get the hankering for it (I love the special effects of the old series, the models are just so great. In general I have a lot of feelings about the designs of both series, but that's for a separate post). Honestly, I feel like Battlestar is the type of show that can keep getting rebooted or re-imagined every couple generations. It would be great to see a pseudo sequel to the remake with new characters and a more futuristic ship akin to the original series and the concept art for the Bryan S*nger version that never got far in production.

I'm open to suggestions for sci-fi shows to watch next. I've been considering Babylon V but if it's in a similar vein to Farscape... I might prefer to try something else.

Have you considered the various series of the Stargate franchises? I’m currently watching Stargate: Universe and Stargate: Atlantis. Both are available on Prime Video.

Another thought regarding the Battlestar Galactica Universe, you might also like the series “Caprica” which was unfortunately very short, but pretty good. It explains the origin of the first cylon, and provides a little on the religious backstory.
 
The Battlestar Galactica miniseries and season 1 were fantastic. From season 2 on nothing but 63 shades of poop and a couple of fecal encores IMO.
 
I started watching The Spy, based on the real life events of a Mossad spy in the 60's - quite good so far.

I've considered watching the Stargate series, in fact at some point I considered making it my next watch after Battlestar... but I'm just really hesitant about it. I hear both good things and bad things about it, and I'm worried about investing my time into something that I ultimately won't like. I watched the movie and thought it was really bad and rooted in colonial ideology, in spite of some of its fun. I guess I tend to find a lot of "fun" sci-fi to be really annoying when it comes at the sacrifice of political awareness, which I guess then just becomes hokey. Again though, I hear better things about the series than the movie and at this point I just can't stand Farscape so I might end up giving it a try.

My plan was to watch Caprica directly after Battlestar, and I just couldn't get past the first episode. I guess I just wasn't that interested since it seemed really different from the appeal of Battlestar. I also don't think it was a really great first episode, I found the characters and interactions to be really strange.

I liked Stargate Universe, but not all that big a fan of Stargate (TV series). But the only thing to do is try it ans stick with it if you like it.

I have noticed that Farscape has appeared on AmazonUK / Netflix (can't remember which), which is another series people loved/hated. And there is a Stargate link there too...

You might want to give Caprica a few episodes, because like all new series, it takes a little while to find its feet. By half way through the first season, I thought it was pretty good.

I agree with Hobbit that Stargate: Universe might be a good place to begin that series. It is a different and darker Stargate. It involves a group of compromised people thrown together on an decrepit Ancient starship (the Destiny) trying to survive the unexpected situations they find themselves in, while trying to get along with each other. It too is only two seasons so there isn’t a huge commitment of time to see it. If you like it, Stargate: Atlantis might be the next series to watch. It deals with a group from Earth marooned in an Ancient City (Atlantis) in a distant galaxy.

Battlestar Galactica (miniseries and season 1) didn't need any time to find its feet. It was well thought out and tightly plotted. Just 7 episodes in season 1. As soon they started creating 20 episode seasons they ran into trouble. The first few episodes of season 2 wrapped up some cliffhangers from season 1, but very drawn out and unsatisfactorily.

Earlier this year I tried to rewatch the whole thing in HD. Miniseries and season 1 still fantastic. I couldn't even make it to the end of season 2. A steaming mess.
 
Watched Archer Season 10. Not as good as some of the earlier ones, but it was still entertaining and has plenty of SF movie jokes.
 
I tried to watch Carnival Row.
I had quite a scare in the first few minutes when a woman carried a photo of :eek: Orlando Bloom o_O around inside a book. Fortunately, it was soon established that Orlando's character had died. When a few minutes later it turned out Bloom was in fact alive and well and even the male lead for this series I had seen enough of Carnival Row.

Finished this 6-part series last night - really enjoyed it, worth checking out.

Still not sure about this series, myself. I have had friends watch it and really like it, but the script to me sounds... dull / predictable / unoriginal.

I'm thinking it's one to watch when I'm desperate.

But... weirdly, I am enjoying watching The Magicians Season 1, which I tried before and didn't like but now I do... strange, eh?

I didn't think there'd be any. o_O That whole city looked so very British and on top of that everyone had Britsh accents as well.
 
Watched the 8-part series Unbelievable on Netflix, a crime drama/thriller based on a true story serial rapist - very well done, and great acting - although it's a harrowing topic.
 
I'm about to watch Watchmen episode 1. Headlines will let you believe its very good. Anyone seen it yet?
