TV Series or Show You're Watching

I get this excellent series via the Britbox or Acorn streaming service... forget which one
Oh, that's interesting, Windy - I wasn't sure if the series' "Britishness" would translate, but I'm pleased it does. Britbox has just started streaming here in the UK, but as a lot of the shows are already on Netflix/Amazon/BBC iplayer/ITV player, I'm not sure of its value.

Toby Jones is an excellent and very versatile character actor.
Yes. He rates alongside Jason Watkins in my opinion. But it is very much an ensemble piece.

The series requires multiple viewings to get all the subtle quips, jokes, and looks. It's simply a joy to watch. And remind me never to eat a swede curry.

Acorn.com has the first 3 seriesOf dectorists as well as a 30 min behind the scenes show for each one... I have a friend in France who says she gets the acorn services with the vpn TunnelBear.com it is amazing what can be found on these streaming outfits but the problem is finding the time to make the subscription make sense from a £€$ basis

Sadly, there are only three series of Detectorists with no more planned at the moment.

The Outsider. The lead investigator has an annoying speech impediment. Was this also then case in the novel?

Haha, that's Ben Mendelsohn, an Australia actor who has a bit of a lisp.

I thought they were good, will keep watching and see.

I just don't get people's fascination with Stephen King. The gore on the murdered boy was upsetting, but the evil is always lame not scary. Some guy with a hoodie and what looked like a deformed face. Glacial pacing, boring smalltown nonsense.

It cannot be due to poor adaptations alone that Stephen King bores the s**t out of me. (I have only read the first 50 to 100 pages of The Stand and gave up). I only like Kubrick's The Shining and King hates that. Doctor Sleep (movie) was the same nonsense I described above.

I don't read much of his later stuff, but loved his earlier (mainly horror) works. I think he's one of the best writers around at creating realistic and natural characters.
Maybe he's just not your thing. Have you tried something like Different Seasons? Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption is a classic!

I can't help but having high expectations.

Star Trek: Picard. Part Bourne Identity, part Logan, part Shakespeare, all Trek!

This is a return to form for Star Trek. I was disappointed with STD and gave up on it but Picard had me fully *ahem* engaged from the first moments. I can't wait to see what happens next!

I decided to skip the preview of episode 2, though. Don't want to be spoiled.

Loved it. As soon as I saw Patrick Stewart...!! Didn't look at the preview either. :)

I would say that there is a little bit of Serenity in there as well. But what a way to subtly examine the big ideas of identity, migration & immigrants through science fiction.
That part about helping your enemy from Nemesis was terrific
Class stuff. And I'm told it gets better...

watched episode 1 of picard. Patrick Stewart can carry any show.

It's a pilot. Difficult to judge the series on this one alone. IMHO it feels rushed with a lot of exposition/ plot dumping to set up the status quo. The ensemble hasn't been brought to screen yet. Lots of interesting snippets/ visual teasers to keep fans guessing as to which way the series may be going.

In a way I miss the theatricality of the 90s sets - the advent of CGI has a lot of shows trying to be movies.

I'm 2 1/2 episodes into October Faction, Netflix's new "hidden world" type show (i.e., there are monsters, and a secret society that protects the rest of us normies). It feels a little like The Umbrella Academy in style. Umbrella Academy wasn't good imho, but it did have a certain style/vibe that some liked. This sort of aims for that same vibe, but feels a tad off so far. It is a lot of little things, like the adult leads not having the gravitas to pull off secret bad-ass.

I have watched the first 4 episodes of The Outsider. I like it so far, but I don't love it. Personally, I enjoy the small town setting. There are some really good characters, but I hope what's going on is not as obvious as I think it is.

I finished Season 2 of The Expanse. I really liked it. From what you guys are saying, I can't wait to get going on Season 3.

ArtNJ, I watched the first episode of October Faction. I completely agree with everything you said. It definitely feels a little off. I haven't decided whether to keep going or not.
