The Expendables – A skimpy threadbare by-the-numbers plot is the frame around which this self-indulgent movie is made. There are many better Mission Impossible television episodes although admittedly with not as many mindless action interludes and explosions. Only two minutes of film are worth watching in this movie—probably on Youtube.
I have a friend who read the screenplay of the movie and said the removed about 4 subplots which would have tied things together nicely. They also took out a key role which would have explained things better.
For me it was a mindless shoot 'em up except that the CGI blood ruined even that for me. Every time I saw the CGI blood I was disappointed. Leave the CGI for dinosaurs and blue 9 foot tall aliens. Use red Karo syrup for blood.
The last movie I saw was The Last Airbender, I spend the last five days watching the entire TV series only to be hugely disappointed with the movie. Aside from not pronouncing many of the characters names properly, they also managed to mess up a lot of other details. They just assumed audiences knew who some of the supporting cast were (which is a mistake considering I am watching this in South Korea where Airbender never aired).
Considering that the movie is to cover the entire Book 1 or the first season which consists of 10 hours of programing. M. Night Shamalamadingdong couldn't even make a 2 hour movie but instead jam packed enough disjointed images into just over 90 minutes. While he is to blame for many of the issues I had with the film the editors made it into a bloody mess.
On a side note since the series is about Asian people, I would have like to have seen Asians playing the rolls instead of a bunch of white actors pretending to be Asian.
Overall, it was a huge disappointment. Looking at what else comes to the Korean theatres in the future it looks as if I am in for some more pain.
