Wizard's First Rule....the Film?

I do not think it will receive the acclaim that LOR did. As it is not as well known except to Fantasy readers such as ourselves. If they wanted to get some promotional value out of it I think it would be a good Idea to make Debt of Bones a movie first see how it goes and list it as a prequel to the actual story. Especially since Debt of Bones sounds more like some horror or other dramatic type, they could probably capitalize on other genre seekers.

Kahlan- My first choice would be Kate Beckinsale. Jennifer Garner, Rachel McAdams and Keira Knightly might be good as well.

Richard- He's the hardest one for me to place in my mind. I thought of Hugh Jackman, Russel Crowe, Tom Cruise (Hahaha!), Val Kilmer (too old now), Ethan Hawk, etc. No one could match the part in my mind's eye. It would have to be a not-as-well-known of an actor with great skill to pull it off. All of the well known great actors would just take away from Richard's true charactor imho.

Zedd- As many of you have said, Christopher Lloyd is the perfect choice.

Darken Rahl- Definately that guy from the Harry Potter movies that a lot of other people mentioned.

Denna- Angelina Jolie, Carrie Ann Moss?

It would be better to see this as an HBO series than a movie. Either way it would be interesting to see how it all played out. Nothing would ever beat the books though. Only the individual's imagination can fit the perfect face and charisma with the characters.

hey guys im new

i was thinking for Zedd that guy from underworld who played victor maybe?
he mainly plays baddy roles but i think he'd be pretty good any opinions?
but Christopher Lloyd would be awsome too

who do you think would play Jagang in the later books?

I was thinking the devil guy from Constantine. he was pretty bad ass. ugly too.

I really hate to say this on this thread, but as much as I loved the book and the rest of the series I really hope they never make a movie out of it. They can never do it justice, and they would never pick the right people to play Richard and Kahlan. I love the movie that is in my head as I read the story. There are just to few good example of books to movies and I really don't want to see this story messed up.

What about TV seires?

I was thinking instead of a movie. anime tv series would be able to cover a lot of ground and would be able to portray the chars in a better way. Maybe just a big anime fan too!!!

As far as casting, I think the chars are much to exotic and detailed for the normal popular picks for richard and kahlan. Just a thought

This thread seems to have died, which is a pity. I didn't agree with many of the casting suggestions, but some of them I agreed with completely (Jason Isaacs for Darken Rahl, for instance) and others made me thinik of possibilities I hadn't yet considered (such as Christian Bale for Richard).

So, yes. Although I didn't always agree, this has been a great discussion thread, and I just wanted to add my own suggestion. None of the characters so far in SoT are specifically of a different skin colour. I don't have the slightest problem with that, but I think that for some characters if the actor is right for the part, the skin colour shouldn't be an issue - and frankly I think that Jagang could only be pulled off by a black man. My wife and I both thought that Michael Clarke Duncan would be pretty good, until I watched 'Underworld' and noticed Kevin Grevioux. If you've seen Underworld and don't recognise the name, he was Raze, the huge Lycan with the very deep voice. Remember that, and imagine him saying "darlin'". I think he'd be perfect. What do you guys think?

I found this really interesting. Especially because many people seemed to have the exact same thoughts for whom to play who as i did. but anyways, here's my take.

Richard - Jim Caviezel (he's got talent and take a look at his imdb pic... tell me that doesn't fit the part)

Zedd - Christopher Walken (He's got the crazy out of control look and can then turn it into the powerful concentration... if you ask me... he's perfect.)

Kahlan - Tough one. Came up with three choices

1- Bryce Dallas Howard
2- Evangelina Lilly
3- Emma Thompson (The only problem here is she's a little too old)

Darken Rahl - Jason Isaacs. nuff said

Denna - Famke Janssen

Chase - Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje (I think it could work. The guy is huge and mysterious with a friendly twist. Says a lot about Richard too.) or The Rock.

Abbie - Maggie Smith

Shota - Katherine Zeta Jones (One Exotic lady)

and just for kicks...

Samuel - Steve Buscemi

I know this cast could never be assembled for it would drain the budget with that alone... but i still think it would be cool. at this rate, the film may never be picked up though.

Ok, for those of you who dont know, they announced on TG's website the other day that the film project is a go. Although I do believe it is going to be a miniseries for TV. For HBO or something like that is not for certain yet. Sam Raimi who did the Evil Dead series and the Spiderman movies is set to direct it. No casting has been done yet I believe, but I am sure they will let us know as soon as it is done. For my own personal thoughts I don't know if I am too happy about this. I hate to see books made into movies and am really dreading seeing what they will do to one of my favorite books. But it is supposed to be a miniseries, so maybe they will have the time to do the story right. We'll see.

every one must know that it is absolutley mandatory that Richard be played by Tom Welling, look up pictures of him!!!! yes yes, some arent so good, but on smallville he is a farm boy hence the perfect look yes you will all see!!! and yes my friend and i gave this alot of thought!!! thakyou:p

Ok, I looked at some pictures of him and I will say he has the "farmboy" look. But damn he looks awfully young. I know Richard is young in WFR but I don't know. I havent seen Smallville so I don't know how he is in the acting department. I personally would like to see them come up with a lot of unknowns. Some of the choices people come up I have to wonder if we are even reading the same story.

well he is in his 20's so thats good, he is a great actor, hes been doing it for a while, and he is kinda an unknown... so it works:D

My thoughts

Hey all, i've been a dedicated reader of the SoT series for years and i just love it. I'd like to confirm that it is projected to be a mini-series, not a motion picture (dunno if that'd been clarified already or not) and that it will be directed by sami raimi.

As for wheater or not i think the books *should* be put on screen, as i read the books, i have a movie in my head. Every time i think about how wonderful it would be to have a *real* movie made out of the books, i can't help but think about all the shortcomings it would have. Mainly, the insights into the characters' thoughts. That makes up so much of the story to me.

Casting-wise, if this is going to be a mini-series, big names will be all but inaccessable. And personally, i think that's a good thing. I can see where some people are coming from with the whole Tom Welling for Richard thing, but i definitely disagree.
I know they aren't yet planning on doing the later books, i have to say how would tom welling look explaining his theory on creative magic from chainfire/phantom. Plus, to me at least, he is clark kent. I loved Superman Returns a ton, but the fact that Tom Welling wasn't Superman just bugged me. Because of this, sorry Tom, i can only think of him as superman.
(as an afterthought, his smile is NOT Richard Rahl's [or even cypher's for that matter] smile)

As for Zedd, i like the ideas of Christopher walken and Christopher loyd, but i think that they, especially the former, would be much to expensive to cast in a mini-series.

Kahlan- no woman exists who can fill the shoes of Kahlan. Goodkind in a way makes her seem larger than life. I know she has problems the same as the rest of us, but i just see her as pretty ethreal and more than human. (hehe... she is... confessor... lol)

I'd like to send a good swift kick in the shins to all who think that Tom Cruise or Russel Crowe are even possibilities for anyone in this film. Especially not richard. A kick in the knee for people pushing for Depp, and and a specially dedicated sticking of the agiel in the ear of all who want Orlando Bloom for Richard.

Also, as much as i loved Ian as Gandalf, I don't think its a good idea to have a well known wizard play zedd. I'll keep expecting him to bust out a pipe and have a smoke while setting off fireworks if he plays zedd. Zedd (as one of my most favioritest characters) should be someone quirky, wiry, and funny, but be able to switch to Anger and Power in a second. (ie: the part in WFR when he realizes Kahlan is a Confessor and BOOM he's mad. love that part)

I'm sure all devout fans are afraid of this becoming a flop, or of it ruining their mental picture of the books. On this topic, i'd have to say that these are both potential disasters, but i of course hope things will turn out otherwise. *knocks on wood*
I say, nobodies for all roles. (so i won't be yelling USE YOUR HEAT VISION at Richard) God, i'd love to be even an extra in the film.

Well, i ranted for longer than i expected to... but damn was it good to get all this off my chest.

Lemme know what you all think. Feel free to tell me how wonderful i am and how much you agree with everything i said. (or argue i guess)

Peace
-Kreschyboy

NOOOOOOOOO Movie please

A full length motion picture is not a good idea. It will be another Battlefield Earth. It was a horrible movie from a popular book that was really indepth. It will never be a mini-series because they will not make enough money from a TV movie. It has to be made for the big screen. For those who have read the book they will be lost and confused about what is going on because so much of the story will be destroyed to shorten the movie. They may try to pull off another lord of the rings set but I think it is unlikely. The Sword of Truth series has more of an apeal to more people because it is truly a love story with a lot of action. So it has a chance to get more of a following in the theaters. However, I wish they would just leave it alone.

What happened to Terry Goodkind saying that he would never allow the Sword of Truth to be a movie?

Heres a suggestion make the Bones Of Debt a movie and then go from there.

looks like it will be a mini series.

Sam Raimi gets Terry Goodkind’s bestselling Sword of Truth adventure series!

Sam Raimi, best known as the director of the hugely successful SPIDER-MAN and SPIDER-MAN II films, and his producing partner Joshua Donen, have optioned film rights for Terry Goodkind’s enormously popular bestselling SWORD OF TRUTH adventure series, published by Tor Books.

Having been approached by Hollywood a number of times over the past decade, Goodkind was never convinced that his 400,000 word bestselling novels could be successfully compressed into worthwhile feature films. In a meeting at the author’s home, the renowned director and producer instead conceived of a groundbreaking mini-series. Within two hours Goodkind was sold on the concept and negotiations commenced. Ten months later the deal was finally concluded. “It’s a dream come true to work with someone of such remarkable vision, talent, and ability,” Goodkind said. “Given Sam’s sincere love for these stories and his determination to only make great films, this mini-series will be a watershed event.”

All of Goodkind’s novels have been international bestsellers. Translated into 20 foreign languages, there are over 10 million copies in print. The SWORD OF TRUTH series began with WIZARD’S FIRST RULE in 1994. The 10th novel in the series, PHANTOM, is on sale now. The 11th and final volume is under contract and will be published in 2008.

Raimi and Donen hope to begin production of the opening mini-series, WIZARD’S FIRST RULE, within the next year, to be followed by ensuing volumes of the epic novels. The development process will begin while Raimi completes SPIDER-MAN III. Definitive word on the production will be available in early 2007.

Goodkind was represented in the negotiations by Russell Galen of the Scovil Chichak Galen Agency in New York City

lol, wow.

Okay, so I read everyone stuff, start to finish and I like where some people go, and I cringe at where others go.

I'll start at the top and work my way down.

Richard Rahl - Guy Pearce (but he'd really have to bulk up) -possibly
Christian Bale - I like him, but he just screams batman at me..
Heath Ledger - he's a nice though but just not right somehow...
Fresh Meat - Find a hunk off the streets.

Kahlan Amnell - Holly Lynch - shes new... it may work. ( http://imdb.com/gallery/hh/1776149/HH/1776149/iid_1199556.jpg.html?hint=group )
Kate Beckinsale - I like the shape of her face. Her features are soft. ( http://www.funmunch.com/celebrities/actresses/kate_beckinsale/enlarge/enlarge.jpg )
Evangeline Lilly - She also has that soft look, although she need to get some muscles to be able to wheild a sword. ( http://www.lost-mania.de/aktuelles/data/images/evangeline_lilly.jpg )

Cara - Diane Kruger - I thought she'd make a good kahlan but I like her more as Cara. ( http://place-au-fussoir.blogspirit.com/images/medium_diane_20kruger_209.jpg )
Ali Larter - shes got that mean thing going.

Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander - Peter O'Toole - although....
Michael Gambon - Seen him in Harry Potter? Apparently he's quite outgoing.
Paul Newman - maybe... can't quite see him with long hair...
Jeremy Irons - I can totally see him waving his arms and yelling "Bags Richard!"

Deena - Eliza Dushku I think I can see her doing it.
Shannyn Sossamon - shes kinda okay...
or maybe someone new?

Darken Rahl - Jason Isaacs - no doubt, enough said.

Chase - Russelle Crow... meh.
Oded Fehr - kinda hunky-ish...

Nicci - Cynthia Lea - hot. or something fresh.
Kiera Knightley - I mean... maybe. not for sure, but maybe.

Du Chaillu - Patricia Velasquez - I like this one. she can be mean, but nice.

Samuel - Steve Buscemi - good man.
Andy Serkis (gollum) he can do it, I know he can.

Wizard Giller - Liam Neeson - shaggy hair, beard, he could...

Jagang - Bill Goldberg - he's got a thick neck, you've got to admit.
Lobo Sebastian ( http://www.scoops.be/contentpics/celebs/big/60774-0.jpg )

Shota - Selma Hayek

Warren - Václav Krejcí - he seems youngish.... that is, if I've got the right guy.
I almost want to say seth green, but I know that wrong.

Juni - Sala Baker

General Reibisch - Todd Holland
John Rhys-Davies (Gimli)
David Sterne

General Meiffert - Josh Holloway - something along the lines of him.

Victor Cascella - John Rhys-Davies (gimli)

Rufus Sewell should play an Ander.

so yeah... Thats what I think...ish. Don't get mad, just build on it. And some of the girls are weak, but they can build up their strenght. Most acters have to.

"Wizard's First Rule" animated?

instead of trying to find actors for the 'Wizards First Rule' and the rest of the SOT movies when they decide to make them, i think they should animate the series, and make the characters what they really might look like, instead of some famed actor that might wreck the images of the original characters of the story.
This way, if the animate it, they can put almost everything from the novel into the movie, and ya, it might take a long time, but it would be worth it.
i personaly think it would be better animated.
just throwing a thought out

better idea

I like hitotian's idea of making it an animated film/series/or whatever... but then the characters will look the way the animators think it should look, which in some cases can be completely wrong. but its a brilliant idea anyway :)
