Wizard's First Rule....the Film?

So, I've been trying to find out as much as I can about the filming, auditions and all that stuff. Nothings official, but auditions are to be in places like theaters and public libraries, and those kind of places, the usual places. But the actual FILMING of the film is to be filmed, wait for it, wait for it, wait wait.... NEW ZEALAND!!!! omg eh? It was great for LOTR and now those beautiful locations will be used for SOT!!! new zealand has a variety of landscapes, and i don't think they could have picked a better place! :D Though, thats only a rumor, so maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.

*Smacks head* No, say it isn't true. I'll move to Australia...

It would be funny yet incredibly stupid if George Carlin played Zedd. But i think lan McKellen would be a great Zedd. And Christian Bale would be perfect for the role of Richard "Cypher"

I just hope they don't mess this book up with a movie like they did with Eragon.

Just an update...

Terry and Sam have been working on some details. Sam is schedualed to meet with Terry again in the coming month. Sam wants to get things underway now that Terry's done with "Confessor"...

I do know that the auditions will be done through a casting office and as soon as I'm made aware of who, when and where I'll post it.

Spirit House

When they put the miniseries on tv how are they supposed to do either of the spirit house scenes? First one: Kahlan topless second one: Kahlan and a bunch of old guys naked. And there's no way they can cut both of those scenes and not get ripped various new ones

Heard anything?

I have read through the thread and seen some good ideas ands some really terrible ones. But is there any news on the true casting?

Honestly all that matters to me is they have the heart and soul of the characters. . . that is the whole point of the book.

Hello I'm new to this website but I read this on TV.com and wanted to post it here since you guys have not talked about it yet.

Tribune Broadcasting's TV stations have bought the rights to "Wizard's First Rule," Sam Raimi's new syndicated adventure series from Disney-ABC Domestic TV.

The weekly live-action hour, which kicks off in the fall, is based on Terry Goodkind's bestselling "The Sword of Truth" series of novels. The plot follows a woodsman who gets supernatural powers and joins with a mysterious young woman to do battle with an evil dictator.

Marc Schacher, senior VP of programming and development for Tribune Broadcasting, said he's "eager to reunite with the creative forces that brought us so much success with 'Hercules: The Legendary Journeys' and 'Xena: Warrior Princess.'"

ABC Studios will produce "Wizard's First Rule," its first foray into broadcast syndication. Robert Tapert, who produced "Xena" and "Hercules," will be one of the co-executive producers of the new show along with Raimi, Joshua Donenand Ned Nalle.

Tribune's stations reside in markets representing 35% of the U.S. Call letters include WPIX New York, KTLA Los Angeles and WGN Chicago.

Instead of cash license fees, Disney-ABC and Tribune will share in the advertising revenues from each "Wizard's First Rule" episode. Casting will be announced soon.

I've thought about this for a long time and this is what I came up with.

Darken Rahl - Jason Isaacs
Richard - Russell Crowe
Kahlan - Katherine Heigl
Zedd - Robin Williams
Chase - David Boreanas
Shota - Famke Janssen
Denna - Nicole Kidman

WFR is one of my favorite books in this series. I can't wait to see the mini series. Here are some of my choices for characters:

Richard - Brad Johnson (if they can make him look younger) or an unknown
Kahlan - ??? Lauren Cohan??? Maybe or Emmy Rossum (Day After Tomorrow)
Darken Rahl - Jason Isaacs? (Lucios Malfoy from Harry Potter) No doubt.
Shota - Catherine Zeta-Jones
Zedd - Christopher Lloyd (He would have to get thinner) or Patrick Stewart (The way he looked in the original Dune)
Adie - Kathy Bates
Denna - Kate Winslet or Angelina Jolie (Tomb Raider look w/leather)
Michael Cypher - Sean Austin
Rachel - Dakota Fanning
Chase - The Rock

These are some of my choices for other characters (who won't be in WFR):
Cara - Kristianna Loken ? (The terminator in T3) or Diane Kruger (National Treasure)
Du Chaillu - Patricia Velasquez
Jagang - Lobo Sebastian
Nicci - I really don't know.

The second I saw Jack (Matthew Fox) and Kate (Evangeline Lilly) running through that jungle in Lost, I thought I saw Richard and Kahlan. But then, I feel pity that they had already appeared in the same show and it seemed highly unlikely they will appear as Richard and Kahlan in Sam's Wizard's First Rule.

When Jack (Matthew Fox) is confused, or in pain, with barely visible tears in his eyes, that looks so much like richard, when he is confused sometimes, and especially when he is tortured by mord sith. When Jack is making a speech to the island people, it feels like richard making a speech to the mud people, or else. Their manners of speech look so alike.

Kate (Evangeline Lilly) has natural black hair and a perfect, fit body that matches perfectly with Kahlan. She seems extremely like Kahlan when Kate half-closes her eyes when wind zephyrs by. The way she holds a gun inevitably reminds me the way kahlan holds a knife. The way Kate looks at her enemies perfectly matches the way Kahlan looks upon hers.

How are they going to pull off WFR

I loved the whole series, especially the first one. As much as I'd like to see the story on TV. The first part of the book was slow. There is so much back story that must be built up to make the conclusion so tight, that I worry it will be too slow and canceled.

Any thoughts? Is this simply going to be a retelling of the novel or will this be 'adventures in the midlands?'

 i never am able to see why people would have christopher lloyd as zedd; how about sam elliot as zedd, (cant remember name) the guy who played lord faa in G.C. as chase?

I for one want to say that the new mini-series is so amazing:D, because i get to see what i've been playing in my head evertime i read the books. it is so cool. Also i was really impressed with the cast (i did picture Richard being a little broader thought) but Craig Horner does a great job. Bridget Regan is a great Kahlan but i was really pulling for Evangeline Lilly (she was the first to pop into my head when i read the book).

How about this?
Richard: Christian Bale (with grey lenses)
Kahlan: Milla Jovovich (with green lenses and longer hair!!!)
Darken Rahl: Al Pacino
Zedd: Sean Connery
Chase: The rock
Adie: Sigourney Weaver (she became old so...)
Denna: Angelina Jolie
Denim Nass: Brad Pitt (muhahaha)
The Dragon: Mandy Moore (only the voice)

Where have all the good times gone?

The last post on this thread was on June 4th 2009. I can't help but wonder what all you guys thought of how Raimi butchered the story line. I wasn't surprised. I'd seen episodes of Hercules and Xena. I knew we were doomed. I can only surmise that you all gave up after the first few episodes and scrapped this thread. It seemed to die so abruptly.

I watched one episode of Legend of the Seeker and never watched again until a few days ago when I sat down and watched every episode back to back. What a piece of crap. Bridgette Regan grew on me after a while. She's beautiful but not the fantasy my mind had built up reading the books. The only comment I'm going to make on the little squirrel they got to play Richard is that he in no way resembles Goodkind's description of Daharan genetics. Oh...and...judging by some of the IMDB pictures, he may have a little candy in his shorts. That is to say that he may have been more comfortable in Demmin Nass' company than Kahlan.
What can I say about the guy that played Zed. He may not have been a very good wizard, but I'll bet he could tear the hell out of an ear of corn. That's a bonus. As for the rest of the cast. They were adequate. Any hot chick that is menstruating could be cast as a Mord Sith. What they did to the story was their biggest mistake.

I firmly believe that the first book could be made into three to five night mini-series that would do the book justice. I bought WFR on a lark the day it hit the shelves and have re-read it countless times over the years. I too can think of no human female that could live up to the imaginary view of Kahlan. Regan was adequate. Lately I've thought that with a dye job Rachel Nichols might suffice. She'd have to be cast, and we'd have to settle no matter how beautiful the actress. Richard will have to be some big meaty dude like the guy that played Thor, but it can't be him. He's Thor and he's probably too expensive anyway.

I would have to agree with those of you that advised to go with unknowns. But...unknowns that match the story at least. You wouldn't even have to fly a bunch of egg head actors half way across the globe. LA has just about all they need. An ocean on one side. Mountains on the other. A desert a stone's throw away. Anything else could be done with set extensions. Really. I do it as a hobby it's easy. I could make a ball of wizard's fire for video in all of about five minutes. Their biggest expense would be the practical stuff. Sets that had to be built. Costumes. ETC. Sure it would be no ILM job, but I'd be willing to suspend some disbelief for a good story and acting. I loved the Dune mini-series and most of the effects in that sucked toads eggs.

Most of the people mentioned for cast were too old when this post started, and we're not getting any younger. Unknowns would be the way to go for the main cast members. You could scatter some big names in for the supporting roles. Darken Raul. Denna. Etc.

Hmmm that's a toughy, would make an interesting movie I think, though I could envision maybe a Feist movie being a bit more successfull, but anyways...

Richard- Russell Crowe

Khalan (thinks that's how her name was spelled)- hmm may have to skip that one for now...though I'm thinking Penelope Cruz

Darken Rhal- that guy who plays Hannible Lecter

That would be great to see the Magician books as an HBO series.I love Jimmy the Hand!

Haha shoodaben, I saw this thread and thought the same exact thing. Actually, the complete chinky, awkward, cheesy, poor actoryness? of that TV series made me avoid the books. I was thinking of reading the books because I heard about the TV show, but I ended up trying the show first and it was BAD. I actually didn't know the director was the same who did Xena and Hercules, which is funny because when I saw the first few eps that's exactly what it felt like. A really bad scyfy series.

Man would I love that! One of the first true fantasy series I read, and it was awesome. I don't think it will ever happen, never know though. So many good fantasy books out there that could be made into movies. I know a lot of people don't want their story ruined by a crappy movie, or a movie that might change things. But I'm the opposite. If I love the story, I want it on a picture screen in any form.

If they can do it with Game of Thrones, they can do it with Magician. It just needs the same good writers. No network tv writers should be allowed near this.
