right.. i will stop it..

'er, hello' he said, shuffling nervously into the room...

I guess I'll put something in here describing myself and my tastes. I'm best described as a bespectacled scruff in my late twenties with a liking for the unusual, and a severe need of distraction. I've walked a well-worn path to fantasy, I suppose; some of my fondest memories are of a half-darkened room, and my father's voice reading 'Lord of the Rings' to me, and my mother being there in the room because she wanted to hear it too. I gave up on proper English as a degree because I wasn't allowed to read about magic without thinking about how I'd write about it in an essay, and as a result I'm a lot happier in my reading, thank you very much.
I'm fond of things which are quietly esoteric without the need for explosions; things like Robert Holdstock's Mythago Wood series, Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising sequence, Gaiman's recent stuff, and the Gormenghast trilogy holding special places in my heart. Another recent favourite is KJ Bishop's 'The Etched City' as a nice bit of fantasy-tinged existentialist angst centered on the most interesting stories of all- how people (often families, or children) feel about amazing things that happen to them.

Err, there, that is all. I can't help but feel that this has turned into an exercise in self-absorption. but, well, there it is. And Hello.
You know, Ondine, that mention of Enid Blyton might just get me out and looking for that book; it was sadly lacking in my childhood...

Hello all

Just took the plunge and made my first post, over in the Fantasy Literature section, so thought it'd be polite to show my face here and say hello (I know, I probably should have done it the other way round, but never mind. Better late than never.)

Anyway, I've been visiting the forums for ages, but only signed up as a member a few months ago; seem like a nice place. My first novel, Winterbirth, has just been published in the UK (it's fantasy, so inevitably it's the first of a trilogy) - hence my appearance in the Literature threads.

That's it really. Just thought I'd say hello. Hello.

hello to you to, zorobnice. I'm not actually from Scarborough, but I'm told it is very nice. and I understand about computers. pesky things.

Welcome Briruc/mr scarbrough
Prologue on your website is pretty awesome, Briruc.
*Adds Winterbirth to "The to get" list* :D

Hi everyone new:cool:

briruc, when is your book coming out in North America? I read the overview & reviews on your website and am intrigued, but it said nothing about a release date for us. I hate waiting! They don't have an impatient face so this will have to do:mad:

You mean we're actually ahead of our US counterparts in getting something!;) How did we get so lucky. Can't wait to read it.:D

Just thought I'd pop my head in and say hi to everyone :)

Been having a look around the forums and there is some good stuff here, hence why I am now a member! It'll be nice to have a good look around the sci-fi section properly in a bit and get some ideas on what to read next and opinions on books.

I mainly read sci-fi but I don't exclude anything, as long as it's got a good story! I read space opera in the main and love anything by Peter F Hamilton (mainly Greg Mandel and Commonwealth stuff), Stephen Kings Dark Tower series, Alastair Reynolds (I prefer his short fiction to his novels but read both) and Harry Potter (damn my girlfriend for making me read the first book ;) ).

Not sure what else to say but I'm sure you'll see me around and about!

Mark
