In wrapping up SFFWorld’s Review of the Decade that was, it turns out there were a lot of amazing books published in the genre between 2011 and 2020 (and we’ll include 2010 since some of our contributors did, too). We’ve got a lot of passionate fans behind the scenes here at SFFWorld and the diversity of our reading lists shows how diverse the genre itself is, as some of the writers and books I’d never heard of prior to seeing these lists.
Here is the full list of posts that celebrate the Decade of 2011 – 2020.
- Randy M (Monday, January 4)
- Andrew Leon Hudson (Wednesday, January 6)
- KatG (Friday, January 8)
- Mark Chitty (Monday, January 11)
- Mark Yon (Tuesday, January 12)
- Shellie Horst (Wednesday, January 13)
- Rob Bedford (Thursday, January 14)
Reading through those links, it is difficult not to notice a few names and books making multiple appearances. When we first considered a “Best of the Decade” series for SFFWorld, we thought about polling various contributors to come up with an “ultimate list” as a single post.
What started coming in from these folks proved more interesting as the last two weeks of posts demonstrates. However, it is still worth noting some of those common authors and books. Three books in particular managed to hit three contributors “Best of the Decade List:”
NOS4A2 by Joe Hill (Randy Money, Mark Yon, and Rob Bedford)
A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay (Randy Money, Mark Yon, and Rob Bedford)
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel (Mark Yon and Rob Bedford)
In addition to those books and authors common on a few of the lists, there were some common writers who made appearances across multiple contributors’ posts, in alphabetical by author:
- Throne of a Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed was a “Best of the Decade” for Mark Yon and an Honorable Mention from Mark Chitty
- Kings of Eternity by Eric Brown was a “Best of the Decade” for Mark Chitty and both Mark Yon and Rob Bedford had it as an honorable mention
- Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey was an Honorable Mention for Mark Chitty and a “Best of the Decade” for Rob Bedford
- Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers was an Honorable Mention for Mark Chitty and Rob Bedford
- Kings of the Wyld was an Honorable Mention for both Mark Chitty and Mark Yon. (Rob is a big fan of these books, too!)
- Seanan McGuire (as Mira Grant for Blackout) made KatG’s “Best of the Decade” list while Middlegame made Rob Bedford’s “Best of the Decade” list and was a “favorite author of the decade” for Rob Bedford
- Multiple books by Peter F. Hamilton made “Best of the Decade” and Honorable Mention posts from both Mark Chitty and Mark Yon
- Grady Hendrix’s We Sold Our Souls was a top “Best of the Decade” for Rob Bedford, an Honorable Mention for Mark Yon, a “favorite author of the decade” for Rob Bedford, and mentioned by Randy M.
- Books from V.E. Schwab (Vicious and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue) were part of Mark Yon and Rob Bedford’s Best of Decade Lists
- Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky WAS Honorable Mention for Mark Chitty and Mark Yon, and Tchaikovsky’s Dogs of War made Shellie Horst’s Best of Decade List
- Chuck Wendig (Blackbirds and Wanderers) was mentioned or appeared on “Best of Posts” from KatG, Mark Chitty, and Rob Bedford and Chuck was a “favorite author of the decade” for Rob Bedford
- I think that covers everything we covered for our Best of the Decade, 2011 to 2020 series of posts.
This coming decade should provide for equally entertaining and enlightening reading!
Thank you all for reading!
